Standard Test Method for Refractive Index of Viscous Materials

1.1 This test method covers the measurement of refractive indexes, accurate to two units in the fourth decimal place, of transparent and light-colored viscous hydrocarbon liquids and melted solids that have refractive indexes in the range between 1.33 and 1.60, and at temperatures from 80 to 100°C. Temperatures lower than 80°C can be used provided that the melting point of the sample is at least 10°C below the test temperature. 1.2 This test method is not applicable, within the accuracy stated, to liquids having colors darker than ASTM Color No. 4, ASTM color as determined by Test Method D1500, to liquids which smoke or vaporize readily at the test temperature, or to solids melting within 10°C of the test temperature. Note 1-The instrument can be successfully used for refractive indices above 1.60; but since certified liquid standards for ranges above 1.60 are not yet available, the accuracy of measurement under these conditions has not been evaluated. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. Standard Practice for Calibration of Type S Pitot Tubes

1.1 This practice covers the determination of Type S pitot tube coefficients in the gas velocity range from 305 to 1524 m/min or 5.08 to 25.4 m/s (1000 to 5000 ft/min). The method applies both to the calibration of isolated Type S pitot tubes (see 5.1), and pitobe assemblies. 1.2 This practice outlines procedures for obtaining Type S pitot tube coefficients by calibration at a single-velocity setting near the midpoint of the normal working range. Type S pitot coefficients obtained by this method will generally be valid to within ±3 % over the normal working range. If a more precise correlation between Type S pitot tube coefficient and velocity is desired, multivelocity calibration technique (Annex A1) should be used. Standard Test Method for Sequential Batch Extraction of Waste with Water

1.1 This test method is a procedure for the sequential leaching of a waste containing at least five % solids to generate solutions to be used to determine the constituents leached under the specified testing conditions. 1.2 This test method calls for the shaking of a known weight of waste with water of a specified purity and the separation of the aqueous phase for analysis. The procedure is conducted ten times in sequence on the same sample of waste and generates ten aqueous solutions. 1.3 This test method is intended to describe the procedure for performing sequential batch extractions only. Standard Test Method for Measurement of Coating Thicknesses by the Magnetic Method: Nonmagnetic Coatings on Magnetic Basis Metals

1.1 This test method covers the use of magnetic instruments for the nondestructive measurement of the thickness of nonmagnetic coatings over ferrous or other magnetic base metals. It is intended to supplement manufacturers’ instructions for the operation of the instruments and is not intended to replace them. Note 1-Autocatalytically deposited nickel-phosphorus alloys containing more than 8 % phosphorus are sufficiently nonmagnetic to be measured by this test method, as long as the measurement is made prior to any heat treatment. 1.2 These instruments measure either the magnetic attraction between a magnet and the basis metal, as influenced by the presence of the coating (categorized as “magnetic pull-off”), or the change in magnetic-flux density within the probe (categorized as “electronic”). These instruments cannot distinguish the thickness of individual layers. They can only measure the cumulative thickness of all layers beneath the probe down to the base metal. 1.3 Measurements made in accordance with this test method will be in compliance with the requirements of ISO International Standard 2178 as printed in 1982. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard.
