IEC 62271-4:2013
High-voltage switchgear and controlgear - Part 4: Handling procedures for sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and its mixtures
IEC 62271-4:2013 applies to the procedures for handling of SF6 during installation, commissioning, normal and abnormal operations, disposal at the end of life of high voltage switchgear and controlgear. This first edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC/TR 62271-303 published in 2008. This first edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:a) the description of the potential effects on health of SF6 by products (former Annex D of IEC/TR 62271-303:2008) has been replaced by the calculation methods for evaluating of the potential effects on health of SF6 by products (see Annex H);b) information about cryogenic reclaim of SF6. Have been added (see Annex I);c) handling procedures for the most popular SF6 mixtures have been added (see Annex J).
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
a) the description of the potential effects on health of SF6 by products (former Annex D of IEC/TR 62271-303:2008) has been replaced by the calculation methods for evaluating of the potential effects on health of SF6 by products (see Annex H);

IEC/TR 62271-303:2008 addresses the procedures for safe and environmental compatible handling of SF6 during installation, commissioning, normal and abnormal operations, disposal at the end of life of high voltage switchgear and controlgear. Storage and transportation of SF6 are also covered. These procedures should be regarded as minimum requirements to ensure the safety of personnel working with SF6 and to minimize the SF6 emission to the environment. This first edition of IEC/TR 62271-303 cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 61634 published in 1995. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: IEC/TR 62271-303 is a major revision of the old IEC 61634. The former sections of IEC 61634 are removed and replaced by the chapters of the CIGRE brochure n. 276. IEC 61634 was issued in 1995 when the focus was on safety. In 2008, safety is a very well known and established concept and the focus is nowadays on the environmental compatibility. SF6 must be kept in a closed cycle and any intentional release must be forbidden. The implementation of the SF6 reuse concept suggested in the CIGRE brochure was updated with the most recent information. Today SF6 can be recovered and reclaimed for either being reused on-site or given back to the gas supplier and reused as raw material for the production of "technical grade SF6". Detailed procedures for appropriate SF6 handling are given together with the description of the state-of-the-art equipments and measuring devices.
IEC 62271-4:2022 applies to the procedures for handling of gases for insulation and/or switching during installation, commissioning, repair, overhaul, normal and abnormal operations and disposal at the end?of?life of electric power equipment. These procedures are regarded as minimum requirements to ensure the reliability of electric power equipment, the safety of personnel working with these gases and to minimize the impact on the environment. Additional requirements could be given or specified in the operating instruction manual of the manufacturer. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 62271-4 published in 2013. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: title has been modified; handling procedures of alternatives to SF6, which are used for insulation and/or switching, are added; the main clauses are independent from the type of gas; for each gas a separate annex describes gas specific information, handling procedures, safety measure, etc.; information about SF6 (former Annex E) and about environmental effects of SF6 and its mixtures (former Annex F) has been moved to IEC 60376; information about by-products of SF6 and its mixtures (former Annex G), the procedure for evaluating the potential effects on health of by-products of SF6 and its mixtures (former Annex H) and the cryogenic reclaim of SF6 (former Annex I) have been moved to IEC 60480.
