Actuellement, seules les exigences empiriques sont spécifiées, ce qui peut s'expliquer par un manque d'expérience en matière d'essais fondamentaux sur les bétons bitumineux très minces. L'objectif final reste toutefois de spécifier les bétons bitumineux très minces en termes de propriétés fondamentales basées sur les performances.
