Il a pour but de s'assurer des effets, sur un spécimen, d'essais simples normalisés destinés à simuler les effets des coups et des heurts qui peuvent être reçus lors d'opérations de maintenance, ou de toute manipulation, parfois brutale, effectuée en utilisation, se produisant sur une table ou un établi. De plus, l'essai décrit peut être utilisé pour prouver un degré de robustesse minimal, afin de s'assurer des prescriptions relatives.

Il a pour but de s'assurer des effets, sur un spécimen, d'un essai simple normalisé destiné à représenter les chutes pouvant se produire au cours de manipulations, parfois brutales, ou de prouver un certain degré de robustesse minimal, afin de s'assurer des prescriptions relatives à la sécurité. Son annexe A apporte des précisions sur l'appareil d'essai, en l'occurrence le tonneau rotatif, qu'il est recommandé d'utiliser pour la méthode 2, chutes libres répétées.
