Cet essai est fondé sur des méthodes utilisées depuis un certain nombre d'années pour évaluer le comportement d'un spécimen soumis à des contraintes dynamiques résultant de conditions de chocs aléatoires ressemblant à celles qui s'exercent sur des produits électrotechniques en cours de transport terrestre, quand le produit n'est pas fixé ou qu'il a quelque degré de liberté de mouvement. L'essai de rebondissement peut également servir à évaluer la conception d'un spécimen du point de vue de sa robustesse mécanique et de son intégrité structurelle. En pratique, cet essai est applicable en premier lieu aux matériels.
