Cette norme s'applique aux spécifications dimensionnelles, mécaniques et électriques des bandes magnétiques et des cassettes, utilisées dans les systèmes analogiques. Elle doit être utilisée conjointement avec la NF C 97-140 Première partie, à laquelle elle fait référence. Cette norme donne également des recommandations sur la longueur des pauses à l'intérieur d'un programme en vue de la reconnaissance automatique des différentes séquences.
