La présente norme décrit un essai de chocs extérieurs, c'est-à-dire par la chute verticale d'une masse. La sévérité de cette méthode d'essai peut être adaptée, afin de satisfaire aux différentes spécifications, par une modification de la masse tombante et/ou de la hauteur de chute. Il y a lieu de noter qu'un résultat absolument exact ne peut être obtenu, qu'en essayant la totalité du lot ; il est toutefois nécessaire, dans la pratique, de trouver un compromis entre la possibilité statistique d'obtenir un résultat exact et le coût d'un essai supplémentaire.
