Le présent document fait partie d'une série de normes européennes établies par le CEN dans le cadre de l'application de la Directive Européenne sur les Équipements de Protection Individuelle (EPI). Il spécifie les exigences de performance relatives aux matériaux, assemblages de matériaux et vêtements de protection à propagation de flamme limitée, afin de réduire le risque qu'un vêtement ne brûle, représentant par là-même un danger en soi. Il donne un classement selon la NF EN ISO 15025, de janvier 2003 (Méthode A). D'autres exigences s'appliquant aux vêtements sont également spécifiées. Les vêtements de protection conformes à la présente norme NF EN ISO 14116 sont destinés à protéger les travailleurs contre tout contact occasionnel et de courte durée avec de petites flammes, dans des conditions ne présentant pas de risque thermique significatif et en l'absence d'autres types de chaleur. Pour la qualification de vêtement de protection contre la chaleur des méthodes d'essai et des normes de performance supplémentaires doivent être appliquées et d'autres normes comme par exemple la NF EN ISO 11612, sont plus appropriées.
