Le présent document spécifie les méthodes de préparation des éprouvettes, les modes opératoires d'examen et leurs principaux objectifs pour l'examen microscopique et macroscopique des assemblages soudés. Les examens sont utilisés pour mettre en évidence les caractéristiques d'un assemblage soudé, habituellement par l'examen de coupes transversales réalisé par un examen visuel et/ou optique de la surface préparée, avant ou après attaque. Ils permettent ainsi de révéler la structure (y compris la structure cristallographique, la morphologie et l'orientation des grains, les précipités et les inclusions) indépendamment ou en liaison avec les diverses fissures et cavités.
