La présente norme définit les symboles graphiques utilisés lors de la réalisation de schémas cinématiques. Après avoir défini les symboles de base représentant les mouvements des solides de mécanismes, les liaisons cinématiques usuelles entre deux solides et les symboles complémentaires, la présente norme fournit des exemples d'application de ces différents symboles. A titre d'information sont reportés en annexe des symboles admis au plan international mais non retenus dans la présente norme car le comité membre français n'en recommande pas l'emploi. Cette annexe ne fait pas partie intégrante de la présente norme. Des normes particulières traitent de mécanismes spécifiques (par exemple NF E 04-113 pour les engrenages).
