La présente norme décrit une méthode de dosage, basée sur la combustion dans un four à induction d'une prise d'essai, suivie de la transformation du carbone en dioxyde et/ou monoxyde de carbone et de la mesure de l'absorption de ce composé dans l'infrarouge. Le domaine des teneurs couvert s'étend de 0,003 % à 4,5 % dans les aciers et les fontes. Cette méthode, dite instrumentale, complète utilement la méthode classique de la norme NF A 06-301 "Dosage gravimétrique du carbone après combustion dans un courant d'oxygène".
