La présente norme donne les principes de symbolisation et d'indication sur les dessins techniques des tolérances de forme, orientation, position et battement. Le terme "tolérance géométrique" est utilisé dans cette norme comme terme générique recouvrant l'ensemble de ces tolérances. Ces tolérances géométriques ne doivent être prescrites que si elles sont indispensables en fonction des conditions de fonctionnement et d'interchangeabilité du produit. Le fait d'indiquer une tolérance géométrique n'implique pas nécessairement l'emploi d'un procédé particulier de fabrication, de mesurage ou de vérification.
