Cette méthode d'analyse, avec celle décrite dans la norme NF ISO 4387 (indice de classement : V 37-001), constitue la méthode officielle permettant de déterminer la teneur en nicotine (alcaloïdes du condensat brut exprimés en nicotine des cigarettes) (Arrêté du 26 Avril 1991, fixant les méthodes d'analyse des teneurs en nicotine et en goudron et les méthodes de vérification de l'exactitude des mentions portées sur les conditionnements, ainsi que les modalités d'inscription des messages de caractère sanitaire et des mentions obligatoires sur les unités de conditionnement du tabac et des produits du tabac).
