Le présent document est applicable à la mise à disposition d'équipements de protection individuelle (EPI) contre les chutes de hauteur, contre les chocs et contre les chutes par glissade pour activités physiques, sportives, éducatives et de loisirs, par des professionnels, des associations, des établissements publics ou privés dans les domaines de l'escalade, l'alpinisme, la spéléologie et autres activités utilisant les mêmes techniques et équipements. Le présent document spécifie les méthodes de gestion (identification, contrôle et suivi) et les rapports entre le propriétaire et l'utilisateur. La commission de normalisation AFNOR S55A a choisi de faire apparaître dans le document les outils à glace bien que ce ne soient pas des EPI.
