La méthode est basée sur le dosage par de la potasse alcoolique, d'un bitume préalablement mis en solution dans un mélange de chlorobenzène et d'alcool éthylique. Le dosage est suivi par potentiométrie. La présente méthode est présentée comme une alternative à la méthode colorimétrique NF T 66-013 par rapport à laquelle elle est plus précise.
