Cette norme s'inscrit dans le cadre des normes françaises de catalogage élaborées en suivant l'évolution des ISBD de l'IFLA. Elle s'applique à l'ensemble des monographies imprimées artisanalement des origines à 1800, y compris les incunables et elle diverge de l'ISBD (A) pour tenir compte des résultats des grandes entreprises de catalogage automatisé. Elle comporte une importante partie d'exemples.
