IEC 60947-4-1:2009 applies to the types of equipment whose main contacts are intended to be connected to circuits the rated voltage of which does not exceed 1 000 V a.c. or 1 500 V d.c. Starters and/or contactors dealt with in this standard are not normally designed to interrupt short-circuit currents. Therefore, suitable short-circuit protection forms part of the installation but not necessarily of the contactor or the starter. This third edition replaces the second edition published in 2000 and its Amendments 1 (2002) and 2 (2005). It is a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition (2000) and its Amendments 1 (2002) and 2 (2005):- deletion of the test at -5 °C and +20 °C for thermal overload relays that are not compensated for ambient air temperature;- addition of conditions of the tests according to Annex Q of IEC 60947-1;- EMC tests: clarification of acceptance criteria and alignment with IEC 60947-1 for fast transient severity level;- Annex B, test for Icd: modification of the duration of the dielectric test voltage from 5 s to 60 s;- Annex B, electrical durability: improvement of the statistical aspects;- Annex H: clarification and introduction of new extended functions within electronic overload relays;- Annex K, procedure to determine data for electromechanical contactors used in functional safety applications: creation of this new annex. This standard shall be read in conjunction with IEC 60947-1, Low voltage switchgear and controlgear - Part 1: General rules. The provisions of the general rules are applicable to this standard, where specifically called for.This publication shall be read in conjunction with IEC 60947-1 :2007.

This publication shall be read in conjunction with IEC 60947-1 :2007.
States the characteristics of contactors and starters and associated equipment, the conditions with which contactors or starters shall comply (operation and behaviour, dielectric properties, the degrees of protection provided by their enclosures, their construction), the tests intended for confirming that these conditions have been met, the information to be given with the equipment or in the manufacturer's literature. This publication supersedes IEC 60158-1 (1970) and its Amendment 1 (1983), 60158-1C (1982), 60292-1 (1969) and its Amendment 2 (1983), 60292-2 (1970), 60292-3 (1973) and 60292-4 (1975). It should be read in conjunction with IEC 60947-1.
IEC 60947-4-1:2018 is applicable to the following equipment: - electromechanical contactors and starters including motor protective switching device (MPSD); - actuators of contactor relays; - contacts dedicated exclusively to the coil circuit of this contactor or this contactor relay; - dedicated accessories (e.g. dedicated wiring, dedicated latch accessory); intended to be connected to distribution circuits, motors circuits and other load circuits, the rated voltage of which does not exceed 1 000 V AC or 1 500 V DC. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2009 and its Amendment 1:2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - Scope structure and exclusions - Editorial correction of notes and hanging paragraphs - Reference to IEC 62683-1 - Motor protective switching device (MPSD) with its requirements - Safety aspects related to: - General aspects; - Limited energy circuits; - Electronic circuits; - Assessment procedure for electromechanical overload protection used in safety -applications (new Annex L) - Introduction of provisions covering the impact of higher locked rotor current to achieve high efficiency class - Mention of dedicated wiring accessories - Pickup power measurement - Alignment to IEC 60947-1:2007, IEC 60947-1:2007/AMD1:2010, and IEC 60947?1:2007/AMD2:2014 - Direct current requirements for covering photovoltaic application (new Annex M) - Load monitoring indicators (new Annex O) - Short-circuit breaking tests of MPSD (new Annex P) - Co-ordination under short-circuit conditions between a MPSD and another short-circuit protective device associated in the same circuit (new Annex Q). The contents of the interpretation sheet of March 2020, the corrigendum 1 of April 2020 and the corrigendum 2 of April 2021 have been included in this copy.
