Le présent document fixe les conditions des traitements de nitruration de pièces mécaniques et outillages en acier et en fonte grise ainsi que les indications à porter sur les plans. Des rappels sur les procédés de nitruration et des essais de contrôle associés sont fournis en annexes. Les traitements thermochimiques de nitruration sont réalisés en vue d'améliorer les résistances des pièces à l'usure par abrasion et par adhésion, à la fatigue superficielle sous charge modérée (roulement, glissement) , à la fatigue principalement en flexion et torsion, et dans certains cas à la corrosion.
