Le présent document contient les exigences de performances initiales, dimensionnelles en début de vie, optiques, mécaniques et environnementales, auxquelles il est nécessaire qu'un protecteur d'épissures par fusion de fibres unimodales satisfasse, afin d'être classé comme entrant dans une norme de produit. Bien que, dans le présent document, le produit soit qualifié pour les fibres unimodales de types B1.1 et B1.3 selon la NF EN 60793-2-50, il peut également convenir pour la protection d'épissures par fusion de fibres multimodales avec une gaine en verre de 125 micron m de diamètre et d'autres fibres unimodales avec une gaine en verre de 125 micron m de diamètre à diverses longueurs d'ondes.
